The history of the Dollymount long-range shooting competition between Ireland and America has been well documented and is a part of Irish shooting folklore. The Americans throughout this competition shot with Sharps and Remington breech-loading rifles. The Irish with Rigby muzzle- loading rifles.
The competition took place on the 29th June 1875 over ranges of 800, 900 and 1000 yards.
The result being a win for the American team by a score of 967 to 929.
This event proved the superiority of the breech-loading rifle and heralded international shooting competition.

A rare gun case bought from County Kildare.

                           One of those special days when a gem turns up in County Kildare. A percussion sporting gun case once housing a Thomas Calderwood gun of c.1835. The trade card states that Calderwood was gunmaker to his Excellency the Lord Lieutenant a position they held with at least two Lord Lieutenant's of Ireland. The Calderwood's traded from 14 North Earl Street, Dublin (1815-1897). We are always interested in buying good quality gun and pistol cases especially those with Irish  provenance. This trade label being extremely rare and in fine condition. One of our  lucky days!!!
